What do I need to hire a car in Australia?
A full, valid driver licence, a credit card in the main driver’s name and photo ID. Overseas licences that are not in English need an International Driving Permit or an official translation.
Is insurance included in the price?
Yes. Collision damage waiver and theft waiver are included, along with airport surcharges and taxes. An excess still applies, and you can reduce it when you book or at the counter.
Can I hire a car if I’m under 25?
Yes. Many suppliers accept drivers from 21, and some from 18. A young-driver surcharge usually applies and some car classes are restricted.
How long can I hire a car for?
From a single day (24 hours) to several months. Weekly and monthly hires usually come with a lower daily rate.
Can I drop the car off in a different city?
One-way hire is available on most major routes. Any one-way fee is shown in your quote before you book.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before your pick-up time.
What is the fuel policy?
Most suppliers use full-to-full: you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. If you don’t, the supplier refuels it and charges you.
How do tolls work in a hire car?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane have electronic toll roads. Hire cars are set up for them, and the supplier charges tolls to your card after the hire, often with a small admin fee.
Can I drive on unsealed roads?
Many standard rental agreements exclude unsealed roads. If your trip includes them, choose a 4WD from a supplier that permits it and check the terms.
